Dr.
E.C. Morris, the first elected president of the convention,
developed a publishing committee in 1896, to create a publishing
literature for the Baptist denomination. Through publication
of this denominational magazine, the seeds for the Christian
Education Leadership Program were planted.
A number of distinguished leaders of the Sunday School Publishing
Board laid the foundation for the current programs of the
Christian Education Leadership Program which include: the
development and publication of denominational literature;
publication of the “The Informer: A Journal of Christian
Education”; the coordination of the Certificate of Progress
Program; and the approval of Christian Leadership Schools,
which include dean and instructor certification.
The hierarchy of Christian Education work include: (1) The
Department of Christian Education Accreditation and Credentials;
(2) The Executive Council; (3) The National Christian Education
Committee; (4) Regional Coordinators of Christian Education;
(5) State Directors of Christian Education; (6) Deans of Christian
Education; and (7) Christian Leadership Schools. This hierarchy
defines the network for the oversight of the Christian Education
Program of the National Baptist Convention, U.S.A., Inc.
The Sunday School Publishing Board of the NBC has the responsibility
for the oversight of Christian Education Leadership Schools
(often referred to as CLS). Those oversight responsibilities
include:
-
Accrediting Christian Leadership Schools
-
Certifying Deans to conduct Christian Leadership Schools
-
Certifying Instructors to teach leadership classes
-
Formulating policies and procedures governing the CLS
-
